Who was energizer Bunny Mikhail Gorbachev? He was a new energetic leader for the Soviets starting in 1985 that tried to bring reform to Russia. His reforms only led to national troubles creating much criticism by his own people. For example, he instituted glasnost, or a policy of openness, in the 1980s. In another instance, he tried restructuring the Soviet government and economy through something called Perestroika. However, Gorbachev contributed to the end of the Cold War tensions with the United States. Lastly, his eventual rise to power helped lead to the collapse of the USSR.
